Are You Autistic? Or Think You May be Autistic?
You might already have an autism diagnosis (recent or from the past) or you may suspect you have autism. Perhaps a loved one has suggested you may have autism and suggested finding a therapist or coach who is experienced in autism. You may be looking for ways to deal with changes and transitions, manage personal or professional relationships, develop new relationships, work on communication or social skills, or develop a schedule/organizational skills. Keep in mind, each autistic person is different and is effected in their own way. Sometimes family members or spouses might be looking for ways to learn communication strategies, deepen their connection, and develop an understanding of their loved one.
How Does it Effect You?
As a neurodiversity therapist and coach with over 20 years’ experience, I have worked with many autistic people who struggle in their day to day life, work, or relationships. This can be a result of many reasons, including burnout due to masking, communication issues with those who think differently, navigating the social environment, or sensory issues. These issues can lead to stress and burnout. You may also be struggling with changes and transitions, time management, or organizational issues. Sometimes family members or spouses of autistic people might be looking for ways to learn communication strategies, deepen their connection, and develop a better understanding of their loved one.
What Can You Do?
Counselling can help in various ways. Counselling can help to develop self-awareness/understanding, self-acceptance, reduce autistic burnout, unmasking, understanding emotions, communication, or problem-solving. Counselling offers validation where you may have experienced invalidation. It can teach practical skills and help deepen insight, and make connections. This can help reduce stress and anxiety and lead to a more fulfilling life. I also work with spouses and loved ones, neurodivergent or neurotypical. This can include learning ways to understand your loved one and ways to communicate more effectively.
